During 2014 and 2015 I was asked a couple of times to accompany on the piano for a few works for oboe and piano by Poulenc, Saint-Saëns, Hendrik Andriessen, Daelli and Kalliwoda. In order to construct a balanced program I decided to write a short intermezzo for oboe and piano to use between two of the pieces. This became Danserye ("instrumental dances"), whose title mainly refers to the groovy collection of "alderhande danserye" in the third "musyck boexken" published by Tielman Susato in 1551. This collection has often been used on records to demonstrate the unique sounds of instruments of the period, among which the shawn, the predecessor of our modern oboe.
