Slot Machine was written in 2013 as a commission by NJO Muziekzomer on request of Trio Cortado. The 3 players of the trio play 9 wind instruments in total. The piece starts with an instrumentation of flute, English horn and bass clarinet. The piece is structured around a fixed grid of systematic instrument changes that in the course of the piece becomes increasingly noticeable. The first half of the piece is dominated by jumps. After that, the piece ends up in a momentum in which the instrument changes become faster and faster - while at the same time the music itself is slowing down.
