Phlegethon ("flaming") was one of the five rivers in the infernal regions of the ancient Greek underworld, and according to Plato "a stream of fire, which coils round the earth and flows into the depths of Tartarus". In other words, a good title to describe the music I wrote for the 4 cellists of the European Contemporary Orchestra (Ensemble Musique Nouvelles and Ensemble Télémaque), commissioned by Gaudeamus Muziekweek.
