In 2011 I was invited to write a piece for the Mahler Project that was performed during the Spring Festival of the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and the Mahler Festival in the Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague. The idea of this project was to make transformations or recompositions of some of Mahler's early songs that would be performed alongside the arrangement by Schoenberg/Riehn of Das Lied von der Erde by Gustav Mahler and Reinbert de Leeuw's arrangement of the Passacaglia by Anton Webern.

These two arrangements were written for the sizeable chamber ensemble instrumentation that was brought together for the so-called Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen ("Society for Private Musical Performances"), although both arrangements have never been played at any of its concerts. This is only logical as Schoenberg wasn't able to finish his arrangement before the Society folded and Riehn completed it in 1983, and Reinbert de Leeuw's arrangement dates from 1986. The Society was founded in 1918 and strived to introduce a different way of presenting newly composed music to an interested audience. In 1921 it had to cease its activities due to Austrian hyperinflation.

The recompositions of Mahler's songs that were made for our project were written for the same instrumentation, with the addition of a singer (in my case a soprano). I decided to base my piece on Mahler's Erinnerung, immediately realizing its potential after reading the song's score. I slowed the song down by three times in order to expose, enlarge, expand, elaborate, and zoom in on some of its subtleties.
