NEOS Brass conducted by Jeroen Schippers

If you keep back part of something, you do not use or give away all of it, so that you still have some to use at a later time. This is exactly what Keeping Back, written for NEOS Brass, is all about. On a large as well as on a small scale this translates to a forte-(subito)piano, in other words: erupting and restraining, in that order. I found this to be a very interesting gesture, common to a lot of serial music written in the 1940s & 50s. The percussion section of the ensemble is expanded with kitchen pans, that add an extra metal timbre to the percussive blows of the brass and play a more autonomous role in the last section of the piece.
