Orkest de Ereprijs conducted by Wim Boerman
Going from high school to the conservatoire meant a change for me. During my high school period I composed a lot of music, these activities mostly taking place under the radar while I also had to finish my homework and pass my school exams. After I was finally done with all these high school obligations, suddenly I could focus fully on music. The environment changed as well. Before going to conservatoire I tried to get hold of whatever music I could get access to and on top of that luckily I had found a handful of wonderful teachers who brought me the knowledge they could pass to me while not forcing me anything.
At the conservatoire of The Hague I encountered a totally living practice: a lot was going on and it was (and still is) a place were many nice and interesting colleagues with very diverse ideas come together. There were a lot of new possibilities for exploration. New for me too were the suddenly much better opportunities for having my work performed.
The first piece I finished while being at the conservatoire was written for Orkest de Ereprijs (with whom I would collaborate again later, a couple of times). During the period I was working on the piece, relatives of mine reminded me of an email I seemed to have sent them as a kid with the subject Hier nog meer kunsttroep ("Here's even more art junk"). Attached to that email was a deliberately silly picture with "Het ruimteschip is het beste dingetje" written over it. I somehow managed to retrieve this email in the sent box of my email program and it stuck me that the subject would be a perfect fitting title for the suite I was writing for de Ereprijs. This suite consists of 8 composed bits of music that are stylized combinations of music that I knew, and liked very much, from both 'classical'/'avant-garde' and 'popular' origins. Just like the concept of having these different perspectives on the music, the title of the piece carries a certain ambiguity too. One the one hand it contains something personal, since I was the one who wrote that email in the past, but on the other hand it's impersonal to a great degree, since I of course had 'grown up' over time and had forgotten completely about it.
