When I was 14 years old, my teacher Henk Alkema introduced me to the music of Charles-Valentin Alkan by lending me a CD of his piano music. I was immediately charmed by Alkan's unusual ideas, musical personality and the constructivist classicism of his large forms. Three years later I decided to shape a fairly large form by slowing down one of Alkan's short pieces by ca. 18x and writing my own music around it. Henk had just written a piece for euphonium and piano, which I had heard him perform on a house concert in Utrecht together with Harm Vuijk on euphonium. I liked the tone and possibilities of this underrated instrument and decided to use exactly the same instrumental combination for my piece.
