"Which is more musical, a truck passing by a factory or a truck
passing by a music school?
Are the people inside the school musical and the ones outside unmusical?
What if the ones inside can't hear very well, would that change my question?"
― John Cage, Communication, the third of the Composition as a Process lectures given in Darmstadt in 1958 and published in Silence: Lectures and Writings (1961)

Charles-Louis Hanon's Le Pianiste virtuose en 60 exercices was first published in 1873. It consists of 60 exercises in piano technique. The most common criticism of these exercises is that "having students drill on purely physical exercises results in an unmusical, mechanistic attitude toward the piano".
